The Buyer’s Guide

There are a few things to consider when picking cordless tools for automotive tasks (changing tires, for instance):

Torque range

Most of the torque range in the tool would be between 75 and 160 ft-lbs, and it’s okay to shift the tires, but it all depends on the tire size. However, you might choose a cordless impact wrench with a torque of 250 ft-lbs.

Battery

The battery is also a major aspect that you can pay heed to when you’re searching for the right cordless impact wrench for changing tires. Since you’re not in the garage every day, and the ambition of a wrench is to carry you along on every lane, you’ll need to find the one with a long-lived, robust battery. And don’t overlook it’s also meant to be a fast charger.

Most cordless wrenches use two types of batteries:

  • Niken-cadmium batteries. This form of the cell is less common with the industry. Even so, you can always see some of them in your tool. The main issue with this battery is the fast self-discharge intensity. Besides, they’ve weakened their influence over time;
  • Lithium-ion batteries.  While it is more costly, much of the Niken-cadmium can be substituted in instruments. They have the same strength as Niken, but they are smaller in weight. They can self-charge up to 5% during 24 hours;

LED lighting

Driven lights are a must-have option. It’s really energy-efficient, and it’s important when you’re operating in a dark area. In addition, you can also consider wrench modes built to make it easier to loosen lug nuts. For e.g., you can choose an automatic torque-reducing or a variable speed wrench that is simple to operate.

Weight

Depending on the needs, you may pick a lightweight or a durable yet heavyweight wrench. You can still invest in a robust case or not since the weight and mobility of this instrument are somewhat unique.

For most DIY, they choose a medium or lightweight wrench, since they can’t accommodate a large one. After all, for practitioners who use this method to make a livelihood, they require the toughest and most durable method to spend extra on a case-by-case basis and to be prepared to use a heavyweight commodity.

Drive size

Any of the wireless impact wrench on the market has a 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch, 1⁄2 inch, and 1-inch drive capacity, so do you know what’s right for you? The scale of the drive will indicate the torque range you will get. And the greater your drive size number, the stronger the torque range would be. You can choose 1⁄2 inch from all these sizes for most tires.

Final thoughts

So, if you’re not worried about the income, you may try Milwaukee, Ingersoll or Dewalt devices. If your budget is tight, you can suggest choosing VonHaus. If you’re searching for a strong wireless impact wrench, you may want to invest in multi-functional devices made by Milwaukee or Makita.

  1. I have access to a DEWALT DCF889B and it’s pretty good. The question is whether the Milwaukee 2767-20 M18 is better than this or not? I’m tempted to get one but I haven’t seen it in action and can’t compare it against what the DEWALT. Any suggestions?
